A training programme created specifically for YOUR Special School.
Some schools cater specifically for children with special needs.
Special educational needs (SEN) can be very varied and can include the child’s:
- behaviour or ability to socialise, eg not being able to make friends
- reading and writing, eg they have dyslexia
- ability to understand things
- concentration levels, eg they have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
- physical needs or impairments
When children with SEN become frustrated, angry, upset or aggressive, then staff must have the tools and understanding to deal with them in a way which treats them with dignity and shows them respect. SEN staff know their children best, and what they best respond to.
Each special school has unique and individual differences in terms of the challenges they face with maintaining a safe and secure learning environment. For this reason, our team has developed an approach to the design and development of training for Special Schools which recognises that your training will have to fit your context.
Gerard O’Dea, Director of Training
In planning your training to manage and deal with distressed or aggressive behaviours, ideally we would follow a process of correctly establishing your training needs as follows:
A Dynamis specialist will (1) visit with you or conduct a telephone interview with you to get a feel for your behaviour-management style and the procedures, environment and client group at your school.
Around the same time, you will (2) complete a guided survey with us, using your incident data, risk assessments and other key markers if available, to establish a documented evidence base for our collaborative training plan.
We will send you (3) a documented commentary on the factors and criteria which we will use to shape the training for your staff team.
Using onsite training for your team (4), booked at a time and for durations that are convenient for your service (full-day, AM, PM or Twilight sessions), possibly blended with our unique and in-house developed online training module (5), we will lead your staff through decision-making frameworks and options for physical tactics to deal with a range of scenarios.
Training may include elements of Behaviour Management, Verbal and Non-Verbal Communications, Proxemics, Personal Safety and Physical Interventions which are appropriate to the level of risk at your school. Dynamis trainers have access to a full and comprehensive range of physical strategies, throughout the risk spectrum, which can be used appropriately and sensitively to create safety in moments of crisis.
At that point, we feel confident that we will have explored and evidenced an approach, with your collaboration, which closely matches the scenarios and behaviours which you have to deal with in your work at your school.
